When Arianna Huffington takes the time to write a book entirely about sleep, you know there’s something there. It seems that sleep has become the new pilates when it comes to the biggest health trends. It is becoming clearer that sleep deprivation is dangerous and extremely unhealthy. Inadequate sleep can lead to hypertension, lower immunity and obesity. We often forgo sleep in order to get more work done and increase our productivity, however without getting enough sleep we aren’t giving our brains enough time to process all the information we’ve taken in through the day which can lead to lowered cognitive functioning. Huffington compares sleep deprivation to smoking which goes to show how much more seriously we need to start taking our sleep. Less as an avenue to feel rested and more as something that will offer multiple emotional and physical benefits in the long run.
