As a follow up to our Women’s Day post where we asked friends from around the world about their perceptions of the word ‘feminism’, we decided to do a little research and give our readers and quick intro to feminism, or Feminism 101 if you will. Feminism, as the word suggests, focuses on women. The political, ideological and social movements that share a common goal: to establish and achieve equal rights for women in every realm. This includes social, economic, cultural, political and personal. Feminists are advocates or supporters for these equal rights. When you say equal rights, you might wonder equal to what? Well, most sources won’t explicitly state this but they essentially mean men’s rights. Men’s rights are taken as the benchmark for the rights women want available to them.
